Jun 04 At the BCF National schools championships six Commonweal chess players, including Robbie Dams, Josh, Dan and Toby Hall from the Brown Jack played at the Nottingham Moat House hotel in the BCF National schools chess championships. Over 140 schools nationwide had started the competition back in October in 15 area zones. Having beaten Hereford Cathedral school and Fitzallen High Cardiff, we lost hard battles against Magdalen College Oxford and Latymer school Edmonton. This qualified us for the National semi-finals against St. Olaves Grammar school Orpington. St Olaves' team included four England players, including the England U-12 captain. We were out-graded us by an average of 14 points and suffered two relatively quick losses, but Josh Hall also won quickly for us. Things didn't look good, as we were vastly out graded on 2 out of the remaining 3 boards. Another loss meant we now needed to win on the remaining two boards to reach the final on board count. Toby Hall on board 5 was out-graded by 33 points, but went on the attack and managed to win. After 3 hours and 58 minutes, Dan Hall also won on board one which meant we would now play Nottingham High school in the final. On paper we didn't stand a chance. All six were England players and we were heavily out-graded. We suffered a loss and then a staggering draw by Nathaniel Garner on board six, out-graded by 67 grading points (45 to 112). This meant we wouldn't be whitewashed! After another loss, Aiden Glennie pulled off an amazing win against his opponent who out graded him by 43 points (121 to 78). A draw and a win would have given us the match on board count, but board three couldn't hold out despite hard work, and although we won board one the final score was 3½-2½. This meant we were National Plate runners up. Final positions: Main competition - Monmouth, Haberdashers Askes, Bluecoat Oldham, Southend HS. Plate competition: Nottingham HS, Commonweal, St Olaves GS, Lancaster GS.
