Brown Jack Chess Club National Club (Major) 03/04
Jun 04 - Semi Final We lost narrowly against Metropolitan. Peter on board one play played aggressively with the white pieces, but his opponent played particularly well to record the only decisive game result of the match. David Bareham has been an excellent captain (and player) for us this season, as well as also having performed excellently for the club in past seasons. We will miss him next season. We wish him well for the future.

Feb 04 - Quarter Final The Quarter Final match against Gloucester was very tight. David Bareham's position became blocked, and Josh Hall had a very uninteresting pawn structure with no 'c' pawns or tension, hence two early draws. Dan Hall stood well out of the opening but, very unusually for him, blundered a piece for a pawn. Hopes of a revival were raised when inept play by white allowed Dan to pick up two more pawns, but a second blunder cost him queen for a rook. A loss on board 3 clarified the situation for the remaining players. Peter Richmond had to win, which meant that Gary Tanner needed not to lose. Peter had opted not to equalise, instead allowing white to maintain his opening advantage by seeking complications. This policy proved successful as white blew his advantage on move 40 and the exchange on move 43. Meanwhile Gary had successfully concentrated on defending his exposed king rather than trying to convert his extra pawn. At the finish he had acquired a second pawn as well as averting the danger to his king, but being short of time, he agreed a draw, and therefore also a Brown Jack win on board count.

Dec 03 - Round 1 Our first round game against Thornbury produced a comprehensive victory. Joshua Hall's opponent gave up a knight for two pawns to open Josh's King but then found that he had to lose a second piece. Peter Richmond looked to be going well but his opponent was able to liquidate to a drawn ending. Gary was allowed to play an exchange sacrifice leading to a knight fork that won a rook to leave him a piece up. David Bareham sacrificed the exchange for a protected passed pawn on the sixth and attacking chances. His initiative fizzled out but the pawn proved sufficient for him to hang on to the draw. Dan's game went the distance with Dan having to win an ending with rook and bishop and three pawns against rook and three pawns. The complication was that Dan Hall had two 'h' pawns with the wrong bishop. Eventually this resolved to rook & h pawn against a rook with the defending king offside.
