May 06 - Rounds 9, 10 & 11 Yippee! It was third time lucky for us, as we finished third in the Division and gained promotion to Division 3. We had previously narrowly missed out on this achievement in 2003/4 and 2004/5. We were able to put out relatively strong teams over the weekend, drawing with Cheddleton on Saturday, then beating Guilford-ADC 4 and Oxford 2 on Sunday and Monday respectively. The whole squad made significant contributions at various key stages throughout the season to make this a genuine all-round success for us. The squad would like to thank the 4NCL officials for once again arranging and overseeing a very enjoyable seasons' chess.

Mar 06 - Rounds 7 & 8 Gary Tanner was our star performer this weekend. He had not played competitively for over a year, and was drafted in as a late replacement. One would never have guessed this, however, as he brutally attacked his opponent's kingside on Saturday (see the game in full below). Gary also scored a creditable draw on Sunday. Having recently returned from his trip to South America and the Rio Carnival, Gary was asked if there may have been something in the Latin American air which inspires chess players?! Pablo's win on Sunday was particularly satisfying for him, as he had uncharacteristically miscalculated on Saturday, dropping a piece, and the game. Tim and Jane both had interesting games which eventually finished in draws. Dan is growing rapidly in his chess maturity and stature, and scored a well deserved 1½ / 2 on board three this weekend. Peter felt he was fortuitous to win on Sunday, but I always find it very interesting how often highly motivated and dedicated players like him will 'get the rub of the green'. Richard, although quite tired, played steadily for his draw on Sunday. We now look forward to the final weekend of the season, and the opportunity to possibly unsettle one or two of the top teams in the division.

Feb 06 - Rounds 5 & 6 After round 6 we are fifth in the division, one place off the four promotion slots. Realistically we are unlikely to end up in one of these four slots at the end of this season, due to unavoidable limited availability of our top players. Nevertheless, we hope to maintain an interest at the business end of the division for as long as possible this campaign. After a slightly disappointing defeat on Saturday, we found a very decent curry house in Nottingham which was excellent for team morale (well, definitely mine anyway - this website editor is a curry addict!) It was a shame that Mike Rabbitt could not stay for the meal after his long and interesting game on Saturday, but he had already made a huge contribution to the team by travelling so far for just one game. Pablo also travelled a fair distance for his one game on Sunday. Johnathan finished his Sunday game with a nice tactic.
